Harbor Island is a 1400-acre barrier island on the Atlantic
coast, with 2.5 miles of natural, white sand beach. The
unspoiled sand dunes covered with sea oats and coastal grasses
are protected by a series of boardwalks allowing beach access
while preserving the natural habitat of many wildlife species.
The fine, white-sand beach is never crowded, even in summer.
Sand bars offshore keep Harbor's beach waters calm and safe
for the whole family. You'll find Harbor Island beach to be a
peaceful retreat from the hectic schedule of everyday life.
Each year, the Island sponsors a sea-turtle preservation project,
in which volunteers monitor the nests and hatchlings of
loggerhead turtles, making it a little easier for this ancient
animal to survive. In the 20 years that the project has been in
operation, volunteers have monitored over 40,000 hatchlings.
