Harbor Island Beach
Harbor Island is a 1400-acre barrier island on the Atlantic
coast, with 2.5 miles of unspoiled, white sand beach.  The
graceful, rolling sand dunes covered with golden sea oats and
coastal grasses are protected by a series of boardwalks
allowing beach access while preserving the natural habitat of
many wildlife species.

The untamed sandy beach is never crowded, even in summer.
Wade in the calm waters or walk among the terns, pelicans,
egrets, herons, and horseshoe crabs.  You'll find Harbor Island
beach to be a peaceful retreat from the hectic schedule of
everyday life.

The rich ecology extends beyond the beach, too. Shady
rookeries welcome 2,000 pairs of herons and egrets, and tasty
blue crabs teem in tidal creeks that crisscross the marsh.

Each year, the Island sponsors a sea-turtle preservation project,
in which volunteers monitor the nests and hatchlings of
loggerhead turtles, making it a little easier for this ancient
animal to survive.  In the 20 years that the project has been in
operation, volunteers have monitored over 40,000 hatchlings.
